Tragic accident
(Charlus)
The resemblance of this dramatic duo's lead singer and lyricist, Daniel, to Morrissey is so uncanny, you might initially mistake this to be the ex-Smiths leader's new side project (on "I Lost My Baby," you won't be able to tell the difference!). Perhaps he lacks The Mozzer's self-depreciating humor, but neither does he mince words, as evidenced by song titles such as "I Never Liked My Body" and "I Am Secretly In Love With You." And the industrial-strength opener, "The Opium Farmer" (which introduces bandmate Paul Opalach"s percussive synths), chronicles a suicide bomber's fate. Daniel's assertive, frank personality and slightly narcissistic tendencies may be an acquired taste for some, but his sturdy, affecting vocals, coupled with Opalach's bright, occasionally danceable rhythms, are likely to draw you in despite your misgivings. Music-Line Reviews Although from Southwest CT, Daniel creates music that blends late 60's California, such as the Doors, Love, Quicksilver Messenger Service with 80's AHA and TenThousand Maniacs. It is catchy pop that is also mysterious, moody and sometimes mystical. There is a lot of movement and moonlight in this music. At times you get the sense of riding down a winding hill road along the coast. In other places, on the five song CD, it is the cool breezes on the beach. On the track entitled "Billy" the lyrical references to flying and being free fit the flow of the guitar work while Daniel's voice soars above it. There is a nice consistency from start to finish whereby it all hangs together, with the melody and the poetry matching the music. Give this repeated plays and you'll be rewarded with the catchiness and connectivity of the songs.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING
"From the b-sci-fi-romance-flick electro-rock and postured vocal presence to the photos of the topless chick with the metallic tire tracks across her breasts on the back cover, Charlus has raised self-consciously arty pomposity to heretofore unimagined heights."
- Scott Harrell, Reax Music Mag
"This disc has rock, pop, alternative, and electronic sounds all combined and they seem to play well against each other. It starts out with a "new artist" sound written all over it... Daniel's voice is unconventional, too: he croons rather than sings!"
- Jeff fisher, rougher edges
"Tragic Accident" has an indie sound but the lyrics are a spiritual sandwich,God on top, angst in the middle, God on bottom.
